Internet for gaming: speed and latency

More speed helps downloads; game responsiveness also depends on latency and stability.

Separate two stages

Downloading or updating a game transfers large files. Online play exchanges information with a server and requires timely responses. High download speed may shorten downloads without itself eliminating in-game delays.

Measure under comparable conditions

Test using the same device and a cable where possible. Then compare with your usual Wi-Fi. Observe latency and variation as well as download and upload speed. One result does not describe every time or game server.

Check your household's network load

Other downloads and backups may coincide with your game. Pause them to see whether they affect it. If the problem occurs in one room only, check signal and location before changing plans.

What to ask when choosing

Ask about technology, upload speed and equipment. If your console or server needs specific configuration, confirm requirements with the provider. We do not promise a ping value based only on a plan's name.

Useful questions before signing up for gaming

Downloading is not the same as playing

A large download and an online match have different demands. Do not assume a provider offers lower latency just because it offers more speed.

Your connection inside the home

Check whether the console or computer can use a cable and what other activities happen simultaneously. The comparator does not measure an address’s ping or stability.
