600, 800 or 940 Mbps? Choose for your home
Understand download, upload and simultaneous usage before choosing a Home Internet speed.

Speed is capacity, not signal quality in every room
Mbps expresses a transfer rate. Higher speed can provide headroom for simultaneous activities, but does not remove walls, interference or device limitations. A wireless test is not guaranteed to reach the subscribed speed.
Start with simultaneous activities: video calls, streaming, downloads, games and backups. No universal number of devices is guaranteed per tier, because an idle device and one downloading files need different capacities.
How to think about 600, 800 and 940 Mbps
| Tier | What to check |
|---|---|
| 600 Mbps | May provide ample headroom for home activities. Also check upload speed and Wi-Fi. |
| 800 Mbps | Consider this headroom when demanding activities and multiple downloads coincide. |
| 940 Mbps | Check whether devices and ports can use near-gigabit capacity. |
These tiers are comparison examples, not plans available at every address. Check the catalogue and availability. Paying for a higher tier without a specific need may not noticeably improve browsing or calls.
Download, upload and latency serve different tasks
Download speed affects receiving content and files. Upload speed matters for sending files, publishing videos, backups and meeting cameras. Ask for both speeds; do not infer symmetry from the word fibre.
Latency measures response time and matters for gaming and conversations. Fast downloads do not guarantee lower latency. Also review stability, connection losses and whether other devices saturate the network.
Test over a cable before blaming the plan
Connect a computer over Ethernet with suitable ports and cable. Stop downloads and backups, repeat at different times and compare with Wi-Fi near the router. Network cards, ports and cables can limit results.
If the cable works well but a room has poor signal, consider moving the router or assessing an extender or mesh. If wired connections also fail, record times and results for provider support.
Choose with a budget and a specific need
Prioritise stable work connections, room coverage, heavy downloads or TV. Compare promotional cost, subsequent price and installation. More speed should not replace diagnosing a problematic home network.
